Post-Surgery Care

A proper post-operative care after the hair restoration surgery is a must because it helps the hair transplantation operation get the best result.

Care immediately after the surgery

The traditional bandaging approach is to apply a bandage to the scalp of the patient to cover the implant wound area. The patient would return to the clinic the day after to have the bandages removed and the implants examined.

The alternative to the traditional approach is to apply saline soaked gauze to the implant area and bandage it. For few hours the patient stays at the hair restoration clinic in that condition. After that he is unbandaged and sent home.

Each of these processes witness the application of several layers of gauze over the implantation site. A long bandage is then wound around the head to hold the gauze in place. The pressure created by the bandage to the scalp scene helps reduce any potential bleeding.

Due to recent advances times there is no use of bandage on the scalp of the patient. This has happened especially after the development of the micro grafting and follicular unit grafting.

Be very careful with all the grafts for the first 24-48 hours after the hair restoration surgery. Usually the grafts do not fall out. In case they fall out you can try to put the grafts in a saline solution (salt water mixture). You can keep it cool at about 4-8 degree centigrade and visit the clinic to get them placed again on the scalp.

Care in the first 72 hours

Around eight hours after the hair restoration surgery the local anesthetic injection starts wearing off. This is when you experience the most discomfort. Often the pain is felt at the donor area rather at the recipient site because the donor area has a much bigger wound.

In most cases the hair restoration clinic sends the patient home after the operation with a few acetaminophen and codeine tablets. It is enough to subdue the pain. You might also be given some sleeping pills for the first couple of days after the hair transplant procedure.

Be prepared for a rather crusty looking scalp for the first 24-48 hours. Donít get panicky. It happens to everybody undergoing hair transplantation.

If you are still bleeding some hours after the procedure (especially after 24 hours) then the clinic might apply a compression bandage and you have to wear it for another 24 hours until the bleeding subsides. However, the clinic will remove the bandage the very next day.

Care after a week

Clinics generally use permanent sutures that need to be removed from the donor site. It is done usually 7-10 days after the hair restoration surgery. You get it done either by the clinic or your family doctor.

The crusting over and around the grafts will start falling after 1-3 weeks of the transplantation. Crusts can separate from the grafts more quickly in case they are moist. Different clinics follow different methods for the purpose. Some use a saline solution and some others provide things like vitamin E containing oils. These are applied to the skin before gently washing the scalp with a shampoo.

Recovery time

Recovery time varies from patient to patient. Generally normal life can be resumed within several days. The doctor gives you specific guidelines about resuming your normal activities. Generally, you will need to avoid strenuous activity.

Use of hair loss treatment products

The use of certain hair growth stimulants are advised to help hair growth after the hair transplant procedure. The products supposedly enhance the hair re-growth process. These products include minoxidil, copper peptide micronutrient-based hair loss products and copper peptide saturated gauzes.
