Recent Advances in Hair Transplantation

Some recent advances in hair transplantation technique have ensured a better outcome of the surgery for patients of pattern baldness. Thanks to the advances, the transplantation operation has become less complicated and painful.

Follicle Hair Transplantation

As of today, follicular unit transplantation is the most reliable hair transplant procedure. It enjoys a success rate of almost 100%. A follicular unit < structure-of-the-hair-follicle.php > is a physiological unit and it needs to be both extracted and transplanted as an intact unit. And it is the fundamental concept of follicle hair transplant.

There are many advantages of follicle hair transplant that explain the popularity of this hair transplant procedure. The outcome of this surgery is natural looking hair. The introduction of stereoscopic microscopes for dissection has made the surgery more effective. The larger magnification helps avoiding damage to the follicle unit.

Small incision done in the follicular unit transplantation causes less damage to the recipient site. The resulting scar is not easily detectable. The less damage to the recipient site has other advantages. It allows the grafts to be placed very close to each other and it results in a denser and natural growth of hair.

Follicular hair transplantation needs 3 to 5 hours to be performed on the patient. After the surgery the patient can leave immediately. He/she can even wash the transplanted hair after 3 days. The complete healing takes a week.

Follicle hair transplant has some disadvantages as well. This technique requires preparation of around 3,000 follicular hair transplants through dissection. It takes a lot of time as well.

Direct Hair Implant

Direct Hair Implant (DHI) technique is the minimally invasive hair transplants procedure for follicle hair transplant. It does not include use of scalpel, stitches or a donor strip. DHI technique is based on the transplantation procedure called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUE represents the latest extraction technique for preparing follicular unit transplants.

The FUE procedure does not entail excision of a donor strip from the donor area. So there is no dissection of follicular units and they are directly extracted one-by-one. It is done using custom-made, precise micro-surgical tools. These tools are less than a millimeter in diameter.

FUE is a simple and painless procedure. The donor area heals up within 2-4 days. The procedure is also free from any risk of damage to nerves. A notable advantage of FUE is possibility of quality control during the transplantation procedure. The surgeon needs only one assistant during the follicle hair transplant.

DHI also ensures maximum care to the grafts. The doctor can decide the exact number of grafts to be removed while he removes them one-by-one. In this hair transplant procedure the surgeon can extract precisely the number of grafts needed. The surgeon is able to extract and place up to 1200 grafts per day. The subsequent follicle hair transplant can immediately follow the first session if the patient desires.
